i first experienced this album halfway through an eighteen hundred mile tour of the five great lakes. my friends and i listened straight through teen dream while driving through the misty upper peninsula of michigan, shortly after conquering lake superior. we had just scrambled, barefoot, from the dilapidated, private dock to the sedan parked on the side of the highway at absolute dawn. it was our first of the five jumps. we had a great energy in the small light; the sun was rising and the wall of high pines left a very distinct impression in my mind as we traveled south. teen dream was as much a part of that beauty. it was a perfect way to discover an exceptional album. the lyrics to “zebra,” the opening track, capture the fantastical atmosphere of the trip.

the above photograph is of lake huron. it is one of only a handful of photographs we took of the individual lakes.
